Regina is home to a very diverse culinary scene, and has something to suit every taste. One of the newest restaurants in the Queen City is Casa Latina, conveniently located in the heart of downtown at 1849 Broad Street. This new Latin restaurant specializes in serving unique, multi-ethnic, traditionally-seasoned meals from the Dominican Republic, Spain and Mexico.
Julio Montas Castillo and his wife, Tammy Leipert de Montas, are the proud new owners of Casa Latina, which was formerly known as Casa Italia, a Regina restaurant institution. To honour the long-standing tradition created by the former owners, the Ricci family, Montas Castillo has kept ‘Casa’ in the restaurant name. As well, some of the exceptional pasta dishes from Casa Italia will be featured on the new menu.
Together, Montas Castillo and Leipert de Montas have developed a comfortable dining atmosphere set in a South American décor through their brilliant use of artifacts, colours, pictures and music.
Both Montas Castillo and Leipert de Montas have had previous experience in the Regina food industry, as they owned and operated a successful Western Pizza location for close to six years. While he enjoyed his Western Pizza experience, Montas Castillo felt it was time to follow his dream and open a restaurant featuring his own recipes. These delectable delights will provide Regina restaurant goers with a decidedly Latin American flavour.
According to Montas Castillo, owning his own restaurant in Canada is a dream come true. It has been a goal he has had since he began working in the food industry at a very young age.
“My wife and I came to Canada in 2001 looking for opportunities,” said Montas Castillo. “This is my dream and now it's my opportunity to live my dream.”
Montas Castillo, an experienced chef from the Dominican Republic, has had the opportunity to work and study with various chefs from around the world including Spain and Mexico. These positive cooking influences can be found in the creative menu developed by Montas Castillo. Each dish at Casa Latina is specially prepared and has a unique blend of flavours and spices.
At Casa Latina you will find a dazzling array of menu items perfect for a feast of dishes shared among friends for a fine dinner or a light lunch.
Some of the menu items that will tantalize your taste buds include fried fish, sea bass, baked calamari, stuffed tamales and hot chicken. In addition, each entrée is served with a choice of side dishes including the traditional South American side of beans and rice. As well as the features on the regular menu, Montas Castillo creates a daily special you won't want to miss.
Montas Castillo’s signature dish is a favourite from the Dominican Republic called paella, which is a delicious blend of saffron rice, and an incredible seafood combination that includes shrimp, lobster and scallops. “Paella is very popular in the Dominican Republic,” said Montas Castillo.
To enhance every meal, Casa Latina has a wonderful selection of wines, something to accompany any of the ethnic flavoured dishes. Casa Latina is now open and serving their South American cuisine six days a week, from Monday to Saturday.
The restaurant is open for lunch, Monday-Friday 11:30 a.m. -2p.m. Dinner hours are Monday-Saturday 4:30 p.m.-10:30 p.m. The restaurant is closed Sunday. Montas Castillo and Casa Latina can also help you make your special event even more memorable. The new restaurant is the perfect setting for groups and special events like weddings, birthdays, holiday celebrations or retirement parties. Casa Latina will provide groups with a private dining area, as well as work with you to create a special menu just for your event.
While the food is exceptional, the wonderful accommodating staff provides exceptional customer service and makes your evening a true delight. To get away from the daily grind, or if you just want to try something new, take a tasty trip to Latin America and visit Casa Latina, where you will thoroughly enjoy an extraordinary culinary experience.
